Why rapid prototyping?

Why rapid prototyping? it is quite an interest topic. Nowadays, in this globalizing world, faster is better. Because of the competition to get products to market more quickly, companies are using rapid prototyping techniques to build parts for testing and analysis.

Compared to traditional prototyping methods, rapid prototyping techniques hold a number of advantages–like speed, time to market, and cost savings.

Speed:
Rapid prototyping increases the speed of system development. With rapid prototyping, it is possible to detect deficiencies in the earlier prototype, coding activities and requirement analysis.

Economic:
Clearly there is a potential for cost reduction. For example, if mistakes can be identified before commitments are made to expensive tooling, then the costs associated with modifying such tools can be avoided. However, the information on cost reductions should be treated with some caution. The cases where cost reductions are claimed do not provide sufficient details of the basis for the calculations or the assumptions that have been made.

Time to Market:
The faster a prototype is created, the quicker designers and engineers can analyze it for design flaws and make necessary adjustments. The next step after making these adjustments is manufacturing. A 60 to 90 percent reduction in prototype creation has a direct impact on how quickly companies can release their products to market

Besides, rapid prototyping also have many other advantages such as:

  • Rapid prototyping enables easy delivery of high quality product
  • Rapid prototyping can rapidly create tooling to manufacture physical prototypes
  • Rapid prototyping can be used in different industries
  • With rapid prototyping, all the designing flaws can be detected easily before the manufacturing of the product starts.
  • Rapid prototyping assists in refining the potential risks that are involved in the delivery
  • Rapid prototyping enables the user to get a higher output. Becase designer, user, and manufacturer can discuss the product and work forward to get the best product.

What is rapid prototyping?

The rapid prototyping (RP) is a kind of technology which used to fabricate physical objects directly from CAD (Computer-Aided Design) data sources. The first techniques for rapid prototyping became available in1986, and since then, a number of different RP techniques have become available.

Rapid prototyping technologies mainly includs:

  • Stereolithography Apparatus (SLA)
  • Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)
  • Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM)
  • Solid Ground Curing (SGC)
  • Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)
  • Direct Shell Production Casting (DSPC)
  • Direct Metal Deposition (DMD)
  • 3D Printing
  • PMD flat wire metal deposition technology

Rapid prototyping is one of the most compelling and effective ways to communicate the look and “feel” of a new product design to others. If a picture is worth a thousand words … imagine what a prototype in your hand is worth.
